Research

Learning
Students researched the life of Gabor Sztehlo to learn about his significance within Budapest. Sztehlo was a Lutheran pastor who established Pax Children’s Home and saved the lives of more than 1600 Jewish children and 500 adults during World War Two. They also researched how Sztehlo continued helping orphans after the war, establishing a ‘Republic of Children’s Democracy’ known as Gaudiopolis.
Students used their extensive research to create a fascinating film about Gabor Sztehlo, which includes interviews with people who knew Sztehlo. This process gave them a much deeper understanding of the Holocaust and their own connection to it, directly linking the history of their own school with the legacy of Gaudiopolis, established by Sztehlo in the aftermath of the Holocaust.

Enrichment

Sharing
Students used the medium of film to create a permanent resource telling the story of Gabor Sztehlo and his work helping Jewish orphans and establishing children’s homes, especially in the aftermath of World War Two. The students also documented their research and visits to Sztehlo’s memorial park at the Lutheran church with a series of carefully curated photographs.
Students plan to show the film and present the project to the school and local community in April on Hungary’s Memorial Day for holocaust victims. By sharing the story of Gabor Sztehlo, the school hopes to contribute to keeping the memory of his work and legacy alive, so future generations can continue to be inspired by his dedication to helping others.
