Research

Learning
Students were tasked with researching the history of their ancestors and started by visited a number of local sites of significance. These included the Belgrade Military Museum, the former Staro Sajmište camp in Belgrade, and the stumbling stones placed outside the home of a young Jewish woman named Hilda Daic and her family, who were all killed at the camp.
Studying the people and places of Belgrade that hold such strong links to the atrocities of World War Two enabled students to connect much more deeply with this historical period. Researching their own ancestors meant they developed a powerful sense of empathy and connection through the individual human stories they uncovered.

Enrichment

Sharing
Students prepared detailed research papers about their own ancestors, using a variety of historical sources. They wrote letters to Hilda Daič, the young Jewish woman interred and killed at Sajmište, supported by videos about her and her ancestors. All these materials have been curated and placed within a ‘Virtual Museum,’ dedicated to the memory of victims of the Holocaust.
The ’Virtual Museum’ has become a peer-to-peer teaching resource for older students to use with younger students, both within the school and with neighbouring schools across the city region. The project was showcased at the City Library of Belgrade on the National Day of Remembrance and is being presented at a number of international conferences.
