Research

Learning

Students researched key elements of Boedo’s history across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with particular emphasis on immigration, culture, community life and artistic expression.  They explored this within the context of the expressive art form of tango, making connections between the themes of loss, identity and resilience in Tango music and lyrics, reflecting the Jewish experience during and after the Holocaust.

The students gained a deeper understanding of the experiences of Jewish Argentinians through the researching and reading of historical testimonies and other historical documents, as well as the wider impact of the Holocaust on Jewish communities worldwide. Students also learnt about the significance of tango as a form of cultural expression and its role in preserving memories and stories.

Enrichment

Sharing

Students employed a variety of creative approaches to consolidate and share their learning about the Holocaust, along with its connections to the Argentine Jewish community and Tango. The students wrote and performed a song about tango, and they also designed, produced, and edited a short film which presents their findings in an engaging way.

The music and videos were shared with the whole school community and heads of the school district within Boedo, exploring how the Jewish community that escaped the Holocaust and settled in Boedo became exceptional musicians within the vibrant world of tango.

“Tango plays in whispers, a freedom melody, of love and pain entwined, through history’s debris.”
