Research

Learning
Students researched the 1941 pogrom of Iasi and compared it with other pogroms across Romania and Europe. Students also researched the Jewish community of Iasi and how Jewish citizens have contributed to the history of the city. Students wanted to ‘feel the streets’ and visited key sites in their hometown, taking photos to evidence what remains and what has changed since 1941.
Students used a variety of historical sources to develop their critical thinking skills and learnt about using these sources to discover elements of continuity and change in how history is presented. Exploring resources on their own doorstep connected the students much more directly with the history and legacy of the Holocaust, both in Iasi itself and across Romania more widely.

Enrichment

Sharing
Students made a compelling film in honour of the victims of the 1941 pogrom of Iasi, which features one of the survivors. Students also developed a range of creative responses to their research and learning, which included short poems and photo essays. Their photos powerfully bring to life what has changed since 1941 and what remains the same.
Students presented their project to other peers on Romanian Holocaust Day in October and are now planning a variety of further dissemination activities. These include sharing their project with a French school on a forthcoming exchange visit, and a formal educational tour of the city of Iasi in January to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.
