Research

Learning

Students researched the Jewish community of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki (Modlin) and Zakroczym during World War II. They visited several important sites including the Jewish cemetery in Modlin, a former synagogue, a mikvah and a monument in Zakroczym. They also interviewed a local historian to build the picture of what happened to the local Jewish population during the Holocaust.

Students gained a detailed understanding of the devastating impact of the Holocaust on the Jewish community within their hometown. Through this they connected directly with the wider atrocities that occurred throughout Europe, and explored what we must learn today about tolerance towards a diverse range of cultures and faiths. The project also embedded the power and importance of legacy and remembrance.

Enrichment

Sharing

Students took part in a range of discussions and recorded interviews to document their learning, including an insightful interview with the historian, Machi Kostevsky. They also produced a range of artwork, creative writing, short film episodes and presentations as a means of sharing and reflecting upon their learning experience.

The project team have cascaded their learning across the school by sharing their work in history lessons and in teacher meetings. The school and students are now planning to present their project to the wider community at the local Town Hall, so that others can learn about the history of the Jewish community in Modlin and Zakroczym.
