The students started by researching when Jewish people first settled in north-east Hungary, looking at their lives and work. They used research from local archives, museums and exhibitions, and attended Jewish lectures, a Jewish commemoration and met with prominent repesentatives of the Jewish community of Hungary. They also visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Centre in Poland.

The students completed a significant amount of research and learning about the history of the Jewish community in two of their neighbouring towns. They also learnt about the events leading up to and the impact of the Holocaust on this community, through a wide combination of primary and secondary sources, which they learnt to analyse and assess.

Students created a detailed film documenting their learning around the history of the Jewish communities of Sárospatak and Sátoraljaújhely. The film shows photographs of former Jewish buildings, synagogues and prayer houses, and compares them with historical photos and paintings of the same sites. The film also features interviews conducted with two descendants of the last Jewish people of Sárospatak.

Students shared their project with the other classes in school so that all pupils can gain a detailed insight into the Jewish people of the Northeastern region of Hungary and the impact of the Holocaust. They worked hard to finish their film in a short period of time and are now exploring how they can share it more widely.
