Research

Learning
Students visited the local Jewish Museum to learn about the diverse lives of 50,000 Jewish citizens who lived in Thessaloniki until 1943, when they were deported to various concentration camps. Students also visited the Jewish synagogue and interviewed a professor at the Department of Jewish Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, learning about Holocaust falsification and the conspiracy theories that accompany this.
Through their research, students were learning how integral the Jewish community was to the city of Thessaloniki, and they were also learning about the scale of the atrocities that took place here during the Holocaust. They also learnt about different types of historical research and how they can complement one another.

Enrichment

Sharing
The students made a ‘film tour’ of Thessaloniki, referencing the most important places connected with Jewish history. Students used words, images, film footage and music to convey their response to the hardships suffered by those persecuted during the Nazi occupation. As a creative response to their learning, two students composed and recorded original music for the film.
The students shared their film with the school and local community. At screenings they talked about the power of walking the same route as the persecuted had when they were gathered for deportation, and they said they want their film to be an act of remembrance and a reminder to new generations “never to allow again such atrocious acts.”
