Research

Learning

Students researched the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, the Jewish Museum of Greece, Sentropa and Yad Vashem. They learnt about the life and culture of the Jewish community in Thessaloniki, how their rights were eroded under Nazi occupation, and their fate during the Holocaust.

Students cultivated their interest and explored their feelings about vital concepts such as human rights and tolerance in relation to the Holocaust. They acquired a critical attitude towards behaviours that discriminate against people with different identities and undermine respect for human rights.

Enrichment

Sharing

Through an educational walk, students had a chance to get to know about important buildings and monuments connected to the Jewish presence in Thessaloniki. Students visited the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, Yad Lezikaron Synagogue, the Railway Station used to transport Jews to Auschwitz Birkenau, the Holocaust Memorial, and the Monument of the Old Jewish cemetery in Thessaloniki.

The project team developed a presentation and shared it with the school community. At the exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Hortiatis Holocaust at the Islahane Cultural Center students conducted an open discussion about hate speech and human rights.

They were people, people with names, jobs, lives. Not simply anonymous victims.
