Research

Learning

Students visited and studied a range of sites and locations in Arta with connections to the local Jewish community. These include the old Jewish cemetery and site of the synagogue, as well as Jewish schools, charity centres and even a cinema. They researched the history of the Jewish community, with the purpose of recording and preserving these memories.

Students developed a much deeper understanding of the impact of the Holocaust upon both local and global history. By making physical visits to locations within their own city, they were able to connect their historical narrative with tangible and familiar places, thereby building bridges between the past and the present and bringing the topic fully to life.

Enrichment

Sharing

Students took part in a variety of expressive projects to reflect upon and enrich their learning. These included participation in discussion and debate, music and creative writing activities. They made a detailed presentation featuring photographs they took on their visits.

Most of the Jewish community were murdered by the Nazis in 1944 and the municipality of Arta honours their memory on 24 March every year. On this date, students will present their project to other students, parents and visiting dignitaries, detailing the historical background to the Holocaust and the fate of Jewish people at the hands of the Nazis.
