Students from three schools worked with Education for the 21st Century, exploring archives to research Jewish protagonists of local historic events, finding out more about their contributions to society. This led to exploration of the Holocaust through personal survivor stories and developed student understanding of the scale of loss in Belgrade, whilst also highlighting the powerful legacy of the survivors.

Students acquired knowledge about the Holocaust and the historical context in which it took place, developed their understanding of human rights and explored anti-war and anti-discrimination values. They also gained a unique insight into the lives and achievements of those Jewish survivors who have enriched communities locally and globally.

Students became creators and curators of a mobile exhibition presenting the life stories of twelve Serbian Jews who survived the holocaust and significantly contributed to Serbian art, science and culture. This developed new cross-curricular competencies amongst students including research, teamwork, digital and data, organisational, entrepreneurial, ethics, and public speaking skills.

‘What Would We Miss?’ has been shared by the partner schools through a series of exhibitions, seminars and resources to audiences at the University, Jewish Culture Centre, TOLI, and at an international seminar in Zagreb, Croatia. This My Hometown project was live streamed on Instagram and will exhibit at the Memorial Centre, Staro Sajmiste, Belgrade, in November 2024.
