Students researched the forgotten Jewish community of Florina. They visited the State General Archives (official state historical archive), where they located records of the city’s Jews before World War II. They also researched old school records, detailing the student population of the time, and the resulting violent destruction caused by the Holocaust.

Students uncovered the rich historical legacy of the Jewish community of Florina and how the brutality of the Holocaust eradicated the Jewish community to such an extent that it subsequently disappeared entirely. The students were able to connect the totalitarianism of the Nazi plan to exterminate the Jews with its impact on the identity of their hometown.

Students have created a short film to present their learning, along with photos which document their research. A number of further enrichment activities have also been planned, including a creative writing project designed to reflect the students’ experience of taking part in this programme.

The project has been presented to classes through workshops and will be presented to all students and teachers at the school on Holocaust Remembrance Day. In addition, it will be published in the school newspaper and presented at open school events at the end of the school year to share with the local community.
