Research

Learning
Students researched the historical persecution of Jews, Serbs and Roma in Pančevo during World War Two by reading historical accounts, watching films and visiting places of interest such as the National Museum in Belgrade and the Old Orthodox Cemetery. They researched a range of historical, cultural, and literary perspectives related to the Nazi execution of 36 citizens of Pancevo in April 1941.
Students were able to connect literary works and sites in their hometown with important historical events. Through this process they began to understand the significance of key historical events in the context of where they live, and they learnt how to present their opinions about the past using critical observation and reasoned arguments, both in their own city and beyond.

Enrichment

Sharing
The project was designed to provide a rich cross-curricular and experiential learning opportunity for students. The teaching team delivered peer education through a ‘television-style discussion’ where 8th grade students posed as experts and were quizzed by younger students, prompting detailed discussion and debate. Students also created a film, digital presentation, and poster exhibition within school.
The team shared the project both within the local community and across the entire country, as the project was featured on National TV. Another promotion of the project is scheduled for November at the National Museum Pančevo, to which all schools and interested citizens from across the city are invited.
