Research

Learning
Students researched the life of Isi Metzstein, one of the key architects who designed St Bride’s Church in East Kilbride. As part of the research, they studied source documents from libraries and archives. They also interviewed Isi’s son to gain a greater understanding of Isi’s journey to Scotland on the Kindertransport, within the wider context of the Holocaust.
The project cohort, comprising students from multiple year groups, were able to learn how their hometown in the west of Scotland, far from mainland Europe, still has a very direct connection to the Holocaust. Students also spent time learning about the Kindertransport mission to rescue thousands of children from Nazi Germany and bring them to Britain.

Enrichment

Sharing
Students have created a short film based on their research which they scripted themselves. They have used photography to research and document their findings on the life of Isi Metzstein, and journalism students are writing a feature about the project for the school magazine.
The film will be added to the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre and a blog made for GSA Archives & Collections. Gathering The Voices Scotland has asked the school to participate in a digital comic project telling Isi’s story, and the film has been shared with Vision Schools Scotland. It will be included in a local library exhibition and be used as a teaching resource for the next generation of history students coming through the school.
