Research

Learning

Students have been researching the life of Alice Slucklin, an academic and esteemed psychiatric social worker, who came to the UK in 1939 and worked in a Children’s Hospital just a few minutes’ walk away from the school. Born to Jewish parents in Prague, Alice escaped the Nazi regime, but her family did not.

Students have been learning about how Alice came to Southampton, and her work at the Children’s Hospital. Students have also been researching Alice’s family, who were placed in camps, and what happened to them. Through a wide range of historical documents supplied by Alice’s family, students have been able to piece together her biography and have also been able to talk to Alice’s son.

Enrichment

Sharing

Students have created a short film about Alice’s life, which details the dangerous journey Alice took from Czechoslovakia to the UK, as well as the life she built in the UK and her links to the local community in Southampton.

Students will be presenting to history groups within school and also to the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team. They also plan to extend the project further with help from Alice’s son.
