Research

Learning
This project enabled students to explore the influence of the Jewish community on the economic, cultural, and social development of the city of Karlovac. Students met descendants of Karlovac families, attended a lecture from Rabbi Moše Luciano Prelević on Judaism and its influence on cultural and daily life, and attended ‘Jews in Karlovac,’ an exhibition of objects belonging to Holocaust victims.
Students learned about the culture of remembrance, respect for human rights, and recognition of antisemitism as a violation of civil and human rights. They also gained a detailed understanding of local history and were able to make specific connections between the local community and victims of the Holocaust who came from Karlovac.

Enrichment

Sharing
Students created a book about one of the victims of the Holocaust who came from Karlovac. The book included their research findings, together with their drawings and photography. They also created a graphic novel about the Righteous of Karlovac, designed to ‘bring the historical story closer to our peers’ and made a film documenting all their learnings.
The students shared their learnings by visiting other schools and delivering lectures on what they had learnt. Their book about one of the victims of the Holocaust from Karlovac and their graphic novel about the Righteous of Karlovac were both published. They have also received coverage of their research on local and national television, reaching people across Croatia.
