Research

Learning
Sadly, the Jewish community in Vinkovci is a thing of the past, and students wanted to research the gaps left behind by this loss. They began with a walk through the city taking in landmarks such as the Jewish cemetery, as well as two sites where synagogues once stood, learning about the history of the Jewish community that once lived here.
Students researched the history of the Gross family and their legacy on Vinkovci, as well as the biographies of David Frankfurter and the last rabbi of Vinkovci, Mavro Frankfurter. They also spent time considering how to apply the lessons of history within a contemporary context and looking at the values of inclusion, acceptance and tolerance.

Enrichment

Sharing
Students attended a series of extracurricular classes to enrich their knowledge of the culture, religion and history of the Jewish community. After their visits and research, they collated their findings into a digital presentation featuring drawings, photographs and videos.
The students’ work has been shared at school and via school social media, as well as in local newspapers and with the city museum. The school hopes the resources they have created will fill in some of the “gaps” that exist, whilst there is no Jewish community based in Vinkovci.
