Research

Learning
Students began by exploring the cultural heritage of Osijek, visiting local landmarks, architectural buildings and places of interest connected to historically influential Jewish citizens of the city. They focused their research on Branko Lustig, Viktor Axmann, Oscar Nemon and Alfred Fischer, who all left their mark on this city at the beginning of the 20th century.
Students were able to connect well-known landmarks and buildings with their Jewish origins and influences, developing a deeper understanding of how they came to be, what happened to the people who created them and their impact on the cultural history of Osijek. Through their visit to the Jasenovac Memorial Area they learned of the suffering of this community during the Holocaust.

Enrichment

Sharing
Students produced a detailed presentation on the life of Alfred Fischer, a Doctor of Law, as well as a number of short films about other well-known Jewish citizens of Osijek. They filmed on location at the local landmarks connected with the individuals. Students also used this project as an opportunity to practise their English speaking and writing skills.
The school have combined all the students research into one film, which they plan to share widely. They hope that by sharing the key achievements of Jewish individuals from Osijek, they will be able to encourage other students and schools to find out more about the role the Jewish community has played in their own hometowns.
