Research

Learning

Students visited and studied a variety of historical sites and monuments in Zagreb, including a Stolpersteine commemorating Holocaust victim Lea Deutsch, a Jewish-Croatian child actor. The students research enabled them to develop a deeper understanding of the impact of the Holocaust upon their city and its communities, and to link the historical narratives they uncovered with familiar places.

This active approach to learning enabled students to form connections between the historical events of World War Two and the present-day memorials and culture of Zagreb.  It also encouraged critical reflection on events from history and an exploration of how these events shape contemporary society, particularly in relation to tolerance, diversity, and human rights.

Enrichment

Sharing

Students engaged in a variety of enrichment activities including debate, art, music, drama, and photography, enabling them to express and share what they had learned through the research process. These diverse means of expression enabled them to develop a deeper emotional connection to the history of their city, whilst strengthening their understanding of the key themes of resilience and remembrance.

The outcomes and findings of the project were shared with other classes within the school, as well as families and members of the local community, with activities and presentations delivered during Remembrance Week. This sharing helped to foster a community-wide dialogue on the key themes of tolerance and cultural diversity, and the relevance of the Holocaust’s legacy to modern-day Zagreb.
